Following a protest by students of the Lagos State University ((LASU) on Tuesday which grounded commercial activities in some parts of the state, eight students of the institution were on Wednesday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for conducting themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.
The students, who were arraigned before Magistrate Eniola Fabamwo, were alleged to have hijacked LAGBUS No: P004 with the registration number SMK719XK, property of Lagos State government.
The arraigned students were Bolarinwa Olamide (23) Oludare Samuel Olayinka (18), Oni Victoria (female), Fatukasi Timilehin (19) and Babatunde Bolarinwa (24), Ajayi Taiwo (24), Olatimihan Taiwo (20) and Akani Segun (27).
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail in the sum of N10,000 each with a surety each, who should be their relative.
According to the police, the students committed an offence punishable under Section 166 (D) of the Criminal Laws No 11 Vol. 44 Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.
Students of the Lagos State University took to the streets in Lagos on Tuesday, causing traffic gridlock on the Lagos-Abeokuta carriageway, protesting hike in their school fees.
They blocked the road leading to the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, forcing motorists to spend hours in the traffic.
The protesting students urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to direct the closure of the institution’s payment and registration portal.
