Poly students beg Akinjide for replacement of bus gift

The euphoria with which the students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan received the bus donation given to them on Tuesday by the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory (FCT),

Olajumoke Akinjide has turned to despair, few hours after its receipt, following which the students beg the Minister to replace it. Amidst pomp and pageantry, the bus, one of the four given to four tertiary institutions in the state, University of Ibadan (UI), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso and Emmanuel Alayande College of Education (EACOE), Oyo could not get to The Polytechnic campus before it broke down.

The four buses were part of empowerment items distributed to women from the 33 local government council areas and 17 women Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) by the Minister and Women for Change and Development Initiative (W4CDI) initiated by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan on Tuesday.

Indication that the likelihood of the bus serving the purpose for which it was given had started manifesting as early as Monday morning when it was sighted on Queen Elizabeth road, Total Garden in the ancient city unable to move with the driver and some others making frantic efforts to see it working.

Following the ugly development, some students of the Polytechnic Ibadan, have asked Akinjide to replace the bus, arguing that events have revealed that the bus would not serve the purpose for which it was given having packed up not far from the place where it was handed over to them.

As at the press time, the bus was seen packed in the middle of the road, near Premier Hotel junction on the way to Sango and the institution’s campus where it had started causing traffic nuisance.

It was gathered that the fault could not be rectified throughout Tuesday following which some of the students that went to check on the bus on Wednesday expressed fear that they would find the bus unserviceable as it was surprising that it could develop a fault immediately.
