Barely 2 months after a group known as the Biafran Zionist Movement (BZM) stormed the Enugu Government House, in a bid to take over the area as the capital of the canvassed Biafran Republic, the body struck again yesterday.
BZM on Thurday, visited the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), to announce the Biafran Republic. This led to the death of 2 people – a police officer and another person, believed to be a member of the group.
During the clash that ensued when officials of ESBS refused to obey the BZM, 13 persons were arrested by the police while several people were injured.
Trouble started when the group stormed the radio house with their jingles, insisting that it should be played in order to herald the emergence of the Republic of Biafra.
According to Enugu State Police commissioner, Adamu Mohammed, who spoke to reporters on Thursday, the Biafra Zionist Movement, led by Ben Nweke, came to overthrow the government of day, adding that their plan was to burn government buildings and property.
Another account called the group Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF) and was led by a UK trained lawyer, Ben Onwuka.
The officer killed was said to be part of a patrol team that was drafted to stop the BFZ from taking over the radio and television station.
A member of the BZF was also said to have been shot dead. Onwuka and over 10 other members of the BZF were arrested by the police.
